What is the DDPA doing about it?

The DDPA was conceived to become a major international research program to alleviate poverty, hunger and insecurity across the drylands of the developing world, in support of the global consensus formulated in the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. In its formative stages so far, the DDPA has:

  • Convened broadly-participative discussions and a brainstorming workshop that have articulated a novel approach to the problem, resulting in a detailed proposal for funding and joint action;

  • Written an in-depth analytical review paper assessing the state-of-the-art with respect to research on desertification, drought, poverty and agriculture;

  • Developed several component research proposals that are currently under consideration by development investors;

  • Participated in numerous international meetings of the UNCCD process to contribute expertise and strengthen bonds of partnership;

  • Developed this website to enhance global dialogue, understanding of and participation in the DDPA;

  • Launched three socioeconomic studies in Africa to help guide strategic planning and priority-setting; and

  • Begun to organize a major international Symposium on 'Why Invest in the Drylands?' to take place in the first quarter of 2005.
These startup activities have been made possible through the pioneering support of key development investors: the Global Mechanism (GM) of the UNCCD, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Government of Norway, ICRISAT and ICARDA. Through their continued and increasing support, the DDPA partners are confident that major progress will be achieved against the triple threat of desertification, drought and poverty.
